We Honor Veterans. Hospice Professionals on a Mission to Serve

With a focus on improving end-of-life care for Veterans, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana is on a journey through the We Honor Veterans program. WHV is an awareness and action campaign developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). WHV focuses on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgement of the service given to our country by America's veterans. Veterans are invited to participate and contribute to this program by volunteering with our Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer program. Volunteers are an important part of the WHV program. Interaction with Veteran patients, the sharing of life experience, assisting with VA benefits, Pinning Ceremonies and other opportunities to recognize our Veteran patients are among a few of the many areas a Veteran volunteer can assist a Veteran patient.

Campaign Information

WHAT: Veterans is an awareness campaign for national hospice providers conducted by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) in collaboration with the department of Veterans Affairs (VA). NHPCO is actively supporting the campaign and providing resources for hospices to participate because:

  • Of 2.4 million deaths in the United States each year, approximately 680,000 are Veterans
  • A vast majority of Veterans are not enrolled in VA and may not be aware of end-of-life services and benefits available to them, including the Medicare Hospice Benefit and VA-paid hospice care
  • Community hospices can join other hospice providers across the country in honoring our Veterans and be listed on the We Honor Veterans website

WHY: Our Hospice will have the ability to promote our level of commitment to Veterans by displaying the We Honor Veterans' logo on our websites as well as community outreach and educational materials. By becoming a We Honor Veteran partner, Our Hospice will be better prepared to:

  • Build professional and organizational capacity to provide quality care for Veterans
  • Develop and / or strengthen partnerships with VA and other Veteran organizations
  • Increase access to hospice and palliative care for Veterans living in our community
  • Network with other hospices across the country to learn about best practice models

HOW: Our Hospice of South Central Indiana has joined the We Honor Veterans campaign by signing and submitting the Partner Commitment form. Our Hospice is "earning our stripes" by completing activities for each of the four levels of commitment. This allows VA staff and Veterans to easily identify that we have made a commitment to offer veteran-specific care and services provided by a competent and highly skilled workforce.
