Concert endorsed as a Indiana Bicentennial Commission Legacy Project

The Our Hospice Summer Concert on September 3, 2016, featuring Peter Cetera, has been endorsed as an Indiana Bicentennial Commission Legacy Project. The Concert was designated as the commission appreciates the work that Our Hospice is undertaking to celebrate Indiana’s proud history and the collaboration we are forging to ignite our state’s future for the next 100 years. To celebrate, our concert will be listed on the Indiana Bicentennial website www.indiana2016.org.

Laura Hurt, President of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana commented, “It is exciting that our 30th Annual Concert has received the endorsement of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission to help our state celebrate its 200th birthday. Just as Hoosiers take pride in our state, our communities take pride in our Concert.”

Information about Our Hospice and the Summer Concert can be found at ourhospice.org or contact us at 800.841.4938 ext. 8000 to find out more about how Our Hospice can support your family.

Our Hospice 30th Annual Summer Concert featuring headliner and Grammy Award Winner, Peter Cetera, presented by Faurecia.

(May 25, 2016 - Columbus, Indiana) Our Hospice of South Central Indiana is excited to announce that Peter Cetera, Grammy award winning singer and songwriter, will perform at the Our Hospice 30th Annual Free Concert on Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 3, 2016.

“Grammy Award” winning singer/songwriter Peter Cetera has had two distinct musical careers. From 1968 thru 1986 Peter was the singer, songwriter, and bass player for the legendary rock group “Chicago”. In his time with the group, they recorded 18 of the most memorable albums of a generation, including such hits as “If You Leave Me Now”, “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”, “Baby What a Big Surprise”, “You’re the Inspiration”, “Stay the Night”, “Love Me Tomorrow”, “Happy Man”, “Feeling Stronger Every Day” and “Along Comes a Woman”.

A solo artist since 1986, Peter has recorded 10 time-honored CD’s including his #1 hits, the Academy Award nominated song “The Glory of Love” from the hit movie “The Karate Kid II”, “The Next Time I Fall” with Amy Grant, “Feels Like Heaven” with Chaka Kahn", “After All” with Cher from the motion picture “Chances Are”, “No Explanation” from the mega hit film, “Pretty Woman” and the unforgettable “Restless Heart”.

Peter is currently touring with his 7 piece electric band, “The Bad Daddy’s” and still enjoys performing his timeless hits which continue to touch the lives of so many people worldwide. He also appears in other musical formats including his much acclaimed “Symphony Show” for the larger venues and a smaller “String Quartet” version for smaller intimate affairs. www.petercetera.com

“We are very excited to have Peter Cetera perform and look forward to a great community event as we celebrate our 30th year of the Summer Concert,” said Laura Hurt, Our Hospice President.

The annual free summer concert is the largest fundraiser for Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, the first hospice care provider in this area. Proceeds from sponsors, T-shirt sales and raffle tickets help us provide unmatched end-of-life care for patients and families in our 15 county South Central Indiana service area.

Once again we are pleased to have this event presented by Faurecia as the Title Sponsor and Columbus Regional Health joining us as Partner Sponsor for this year’s event.

We are currently inviting additional sponsors and advertisers. If you are interested in supporting this community event, contact Sheryl Tracey, Manager of Resource Development at 812.314.8053.

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Named a 2016 HOSPICE HONORS Recipient

Columbus, Indiana— Our Hospice of South Central Indiana has been named a 2016 Hospice Honors recipient by Deyta Analytics, a division of HEALTHCAREfirst, the leading provider of Web-based home health and hospice software, outsourced billing and coding services, and advanced analytics. Hospice Honors is a prestigious program that recognizes hospices providing the highest level of quality as measured from the caregiver’s point of view.

"Hospice Honors is a landmark compilation of hospices that provide the best patient and caregiver experiences," said Bobby Robertson, President and CEO of HEALTHCAREfirst. "I am extremely proud of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana for achieving this highest of honors and I congratulate them on their success."

Award criteria were based on Hospice CAHPS survey results for an evaluation period of April through September 2015. In order to receive the award, hospices must have partnered with Deyta Analytics, a division of HEALTHCAREfirst, as their survey partner and must have had at least one completed survey returned in each quarter of the evaluation period. Award recipients were identified by evaluating hospices’ performance on a set of 24 quality indicator measures. Individual hospice performance scores were aggregated from all surveys with a final survey status of complete for the evaluation period and were compared on a question-by-question basis to a national performance score calculated from all partnering hospices contained in Deyta Analytics’ Hospice CAHPS database.

"We are honored to receive this award as it means our patients and families are pleased with the care and support we provide," said Laura Hurt, Our Hospice President. "We are proud to be the local, not-for-profit hospice carrying out our mission to make every moment count. It is rewarding to know our families recognize we are fulfilling our mission."

2015 Our Hospice Concert Exceeds Goal and Raises Over $100,000 (net proceeds) for Patients and Family Care

The 29th Annual Our Hospice Concert, DON FELDER – AN EVENING AT THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA, was extremely successful, despite a light rain that slightly delayed the Opening Band, 40 Years of College.

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana relies on the generosity of the community to support our largest fundraiser of the year and 2015 was no exception as we exceeded our goal and raised over $100,000 (net proceeds) to provide extraordinary care for those facing a life-limiting illness and their families.

Laura Hurt, President of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana said, “We are very grateful to the community that so faithfully supports this fundraising event. Our mission to make every moment count for our patients and their families is enhanced when we can serve everyone that needs our care. The funds we raise at the annual concert have become even more important as the need for hospice care has increased and many businesses around us have started including hospice care in their services.”

Proceeds will be used to provide services to patients and families that are not covered by other insurance programs. With increased competition from other hospices in the area, some of which do not take patients that do not have insurance or Medicare coverage, it is important for those needing hospice care to ensure they are signing up with Our Hospice if that is what they intend.

Winners of this year’s raffles were:
Grand prize, $10,000 – Ms. Mimi Riffle of Columbus
$500 –1st prize - Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Norfrey of Columbus
$250 – 2nd prize – Joan Sterling of Greensburg
$150 – 3rd prize – Ronnie Deaton of Indianapolis
$100 – 4th prize – Karen Hardwick of Morristown

The Big Rig Grill Winner: Joe Andrew
The Ruckus Winner: Dave DeGraaf
Grill de Ville Winner: Joan Dunlap
Grills were designed, built and donated by Faurecia employees.

Hurt added, “It is thanks to our sponsors, corporate supporters, individual benefactors, program book advertisers and the solid community support that contributes with purchases of raffle tickets, posters and T-shirts, that we were able to exceed our goal.” Hurt continued, “A special thanks to our Title Sponsor, Faurecia, and Partner Sponsor, Columbus Regional Health, for their support and commitment to Our Hospice and the Summer Concert.”

We still have a limited number of short-sleeved T-shirts and posters available that can be purchased by contacting us at 812.314.8041. In addition, we will be hosting an online auction in the near future for the original canvas painting donated by local artist, Donna Rosenberg, on which the concert artwork was based. The artwork can be viewed in the lobby of the Columbus Visitors Center. Information about participating in the online auction will be on our website at www.ourhospice.org

Support us by purchasing a raffle ticket for $10 - for a chance to win $10,000. Call us at 812.314.8004.

2015 Our Hospice Concert Raffle Tickets are Now Available!

The 29th Annual Our Hospice Concert, DON FELDER – AN EVENING AT THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA, is expected to draw thousands to the Custer-Nugent Amphitheater at Mill Race Park on September 5. While admission to the 2015 concert is free, our goal is to generate $100,000 in net revenue from the sales of $10 raffle tickets (for a chance to win $10,000), the official Our Hospice concert T-shirt and a commemorative poster. The funds raised by the concert help us “make every moment count” for our patients and families “for as long as we can.” In the past year we were able to…

• Provide the necessary support and equipment so that a patient could attend his grandson’s first game of his high school senior season – giving a high school basketball player one more opportunity to hear his grandpa cheer him on.

• Spend the necessary staff time to work through the Veterans Administration system to help a Vietnam veteran receive back pay and ongoing disability benefits – providing relief from financial struggles for both the patient and his family.

• Arrange an anniversary celebration – making it possible for a patient to do something special for his wife on their 50th anniversary.

• Assist the grandparents of a newborn with a congenital condition to make arrangements and find the resources to travel to Indiana – making it possible for the family to be together during this critical time.

• Provide bereavement support for 13 months after the passing of a loved one. This support is available to Our Hospice families and friends and to all members of the community in our 15 county service area. A participant commented, “I have made lasting friends from the bereavement sessions…these sessions helped me in becoming self-sufficient once again.”

To make a donation or for information about how to purchase raffle tickets, commemorative posters (designed by Donna Rosenberg), and T-shirts call 812.314.8004. Commemorative posters, T-shirts and raffle tickets will also be available at the concert. Winner will be drawn at the end of the concert - raffle ticket purchasers need not be present to win.

Raffle tickets may also be purchased at the following locations:

Our Hospice Center, 2626 East 17th Street, Columbus
Viewpoint Books, 548 Washington Street, Columbus Columbus
Regional Health Gift Shop, 2400 17th Street, Columbus

Our Hospice Jennings County, 245 Norris, North Vernon
Our Hospice of Decatur/Shelby, 1201 N Lincoln Street Suite A, Greensburg

We are also pleased to announce that…The Republic’s graphic artists entered into a friendly competition to design the concert promotional posters and program book cover. The top five entries were presented to a committee made up of Our Hospice staff and leadership, and local artist Donna Rosenberg. The winning design was created by Amanda Waltz, senior graphic designer at The Republic.

DON FELDER -AN EVENING AT THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA To Headline 2015 Our Hospice Concert September 5th, Mill Race Park, Columbus, IN

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana announces DON FELDER – AN EVENING AT THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA will headline the 2015 Our Hospice Concert on September 5th at Mill Race Park, Columbus, IN! The free community concert over Labor Day weekend is Our Hospice’s largest fundraiser to benefit patients with an advanced illness and their families. Don Felder is renowned as a former lead guitarist of the Eagles, “one of the most popular and influential rock groups of our time,” per Felder’s publicist.

The 29th Annual Concert is supported by Faurecia, Title Sponsor, and Columbus Regional Health, Partner Sponsor. “We are grateful to Faurecia and Columbus Regional Health as our major concert sponsors,” said Laura M. Hurt, President of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. “They embrace and uplift our not-for-profit, community-based organization and our mission ‘to make every moment count’ for our patients and their families. As the Title Sponsor, Faurecia elevated their support of our concert as a signature event in Columbus and Bartholomew County. We appreciate Faurecia distinguishing its identity, as a world-renowned manufacturer of exhaust and emission control systems for auto makers, with Our Hospice and the concert as a cause that they and their employees will rally around this year and in the future.” Faurecia’s research and development center is located at Walesboro and their manufacturing facility is at 601 Gladstone Avenue in Columbus.

“A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998, Felder was a former Eagles lead guitarist for 27 years (1974-2001), putting his mark on numerous Eagles milestones,” per Felder’s publicist. “Felder originated the music and co-wrote the Eaglesʼ biggest hit – the iconic, Grammy-studded smash ‘Hotel California’ – along with fan favorites like ‘Victim of Love’ and ‘Those Shoes’. He became immediately celebrated for his lyrical, signature guitar work on legendary songs like ‘Hotel California,’ ‘One of These Nights,’ ‘New Kid in Town,’ and numerous more. ‘Hotel California’ was recently voted the Number 1 best 12-string guitar song in the world by Guitar World magazine.”

In securing DON FELDER – AN EVENING AT THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA for the 2015 concert, Our Hospice continues with its plans to contract with national bands popular in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s so that the free community concert will attract a broader audience, and be more inclusive of all demographic age groups.

Opening band for the concert will be 40 Years of College, a popular local group of musicians who will perform classic rock from the 60’s and 70’s. Warren Ward, manager of 40 Years of College, said the band “truly is honored to perform at the Our Hospice Concert. Our Hospice is one of the most important programs our community has to offer and it’s our great pleasure to be involved with this event again.”

The Our Hospice Concert typically draws thousands to the Custer-Nugent Amphitheater at Mill Race Park and remains one of the county’s largest single-day events. While admission to the 2015 concert is free, Our Hospice hopes to generate $100,000 in net revenue from the sales of $10 raffle tickets (for a chance to win $10,000), the official Our Hospice concert T-shirt, food vendor sales and home-baked cookies (made by Our Hospice staff and volunteers).

“The concert has been a tradition in our community since 1987, and has become the largest fundraiser for Our Hospice,” said Laura Hurt. “Revenue raised from the concert helps Our Hospice continue providing excellent care and services to our patients and their families. We thank our area communities in the 15 South Central Indiana counties we serve for their support of our not-for-profit, community-based organization.”

21st Annual Decatur Golf Tournament -July 15, 2015

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana is pleased to announce the 21st Annual Decatur Golf Tournament will take place on July 15, 2015, at the Greensburg Country Club.  Event Co-Chairs Steve Finlay and Mark Wickens have teamed up with other Community Relations committee members Chris Bower, Jon Porter, Jim Sturges, Steve Taylor, Jim Wenning and Danny Wolford to create an entertaining day of golf and fundraising.  Volunteers who will help prepare the delicious lunches for tournament participants include Sheila Doerflinger, Sharon Wickens and Wilma Young.

The $75 per player fee ($300 per team) includes green fees, sack lunch and awards dinner.  The tournament begins at 11:00 AM (shotgun start, scramble format) at the Greensburg Country Club, 1630 West Park Road, Greenburg, Indiana.  Rain date for the event is July 15, 2015.

Adding to the excitement of the competition, Don Meyer Ford (Greensburg) is offering a chance to win a 2015 Ford Fusion to be awarded to the lucky participant who makes a hole-in-one on Hole 17.  Also being offered by Don Meyer Ford are prize packages for holes-in-one on:  Hole #2 a “Stay & Play” two-night golf package at The Revere Golf Club, Henderson, Nevada (does not include airfare); Hole #10, a three-day/two-night vacation package at the Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan (does not include airfare); and Hole#5, a Tour Edge Fairway Wood.

Proceeds from the Decatur Golf Tournament helps provide expert end-of-life care and services for Our Hospice patients and their families in the Decatur County service area.  In 2014 our staff and volunteers cared for 302 individuals with an advanced illness and made 1,801 bereavement contacts with patient family members in Decatur County.  Last year we provided $225,119 in uncompensated professional medical care, support services and bereavement care for our patients and their families.  Funds to pay for the cost of this care are provided through memorials, donations and fundraising events like the Decatur Golf Tournament.  Since 1994, through the support of the generous tournament sponsors and donors this event has raised a total of over $450,000.

Anyone interested in participating in the tournament or making a donation to Our Hospice of Decatur/Shelby may contact:  Sheryl Tracey, 812.314.8053 or Julie Davis, 812.314.8085

Transition at Our Hospice

Sandy Carmichael (center) stands with Our Hospice Board of Directors and administrative staff in front of the Inpatient Facility building named in her honor.  Laura Hurt (far right) is replacing retiring Carmichael as President of Our Hospice.

Sandy Carmichael, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana’s longstanding President, was recently honored at a reception held at Our Hospice Inpatient Facility in Columbus. She will be retiring December 31, and in recognition of her 34 years of service to the organization, the Board of Directors have named the building the “Sandy Carmichael Hospice Center”. Carmichael was one of the founders of Our Hospice and was instrumental in raising the funds to build the facility which opened its doors in 2004. “It is the greatest honor that I have or will ever receive, “Carmichael said. Tom Dowd, president of Our Hospice Board, said it was an easy decision to honor Carmichael for her enthusiasm and perseverance in establishing Our Hospice services in 15 counties in south central Indiana. “We can’t say enough good things about Sandy’s hard work, her dedication to the community over the years and her helping to start hospice,” Dowd said. He said that without her involvement and passion, Our Hospice would not be what it is today.
The Board has chosen Laura Hurt as Carmichael’s successor and she brings both clinical and management experience to her new role. She most recently served as Director of Volunteer Services and Diversity Strategy at Columbus Regional Hospital where she coordinated the activities of 225 auxiliary volunteers and the Hospital Gift Shop. In addition she was responsible for developing and implementing diversity strategies to better serve patients, employees and the community. “Our Hospice is such a treasure in our communities, I am deeply honored to be following in the footsteps of such legacy and continue the tradition of excellence in care to patients and families,” Hurt said. “At this time of important changes in healthcare, I am happy to be a part of what the future of Our Hospice will be.”
Founded in1980, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana is a community-based, nonprofit organization committed to providing comfort and care for terminally ill patients and their families. With a service area of fifteen counties, Our Hospice maintains three community-based offices in the region with over 140 employees and 250 community volunteers. Our Hospice provides services wherever the patient resides and also has the only Inpatient Facility in the region. Our Hospice does not deny services to anyone regardless of their diagnosis or ability to pay. For more information please call (812) 314-8000 or toll free at 800-841-4938 ext. 8000.
