About Us

The Hospice Philosophy

At Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, we affirm life. We understand that dying is a normal process, whether it occurs naturally or as a result of a disease. Our goal is neither to hasten nor to postpone death. Instead, we strive to provide appropriate care and to foster a compassionate community that can support patients and their families during this time. We believe that through our services, patients and their loved ones can attain a satisfactory level of mental and spiritual preparation for the inevitable.

Our History

Nurtured by Community

Foundation Built on Community Dreams

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana was born from a dream. In October 1978, seven community-minded individuals came together with a shared vision of creating a hospice for Columbus. After eight months of planning and laying the foundation, a seven-member board took the helm in January 1980, hiring a medical director and an administrator.

Early Support and Growth

Our early years were sustained by generous contributions from foundations and philanthropic organizations, including BCH Foundation, Cummins Foundation, Irwin Management Foundation, and Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation. We were also supported by donations from service groups, churches, and individuals.

Current Funding and Certification

Today, funding for Our Hospice services comes from a variety of sources, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance reimbursements, memorials, private donations, and fundraising events. We are certified by Medicare and Medicaid and are a licensed provider of hospice services in the state of Indiana.

Hospice Center Inpatient Facility

In January 2004, we opened our Hospice Center Inpatient Facility in Columbus, Indiana, serving as an administrative hub for our 16-county service area. With 14 private patient rooms, 2 family rooms, a family dining room, playroom, library, chapel, and gift shop, we provide a comforting environment for patients and their families. Our tranquil exterior grounds include the Meditation Garden, Terrace Garden, and Serenity Garden, providing serene spaces for relaxation and reflection.

Comprehensive Support

Our Inpatient Facility supports patients who require intensive pain and symptom relief, as determined by our medical staff. We also offer Respite care to support the families and caregivers of patients on our service. While our primary goal is to help patients return to their home setting, we are here to provide essential support when needed.

Expanding Our Reach

Our corporate office and Inpatient Facility are located at 2626 East 17th Street in Columbus, Indiana. We have also expanded our reach with office sites in Greensburg and North Vernon.

Our Commitment: Quality Care for All

Our Hospice of South Central Indiana is governed by an experienced and visionary board dedicated to providing quality care to the terminally ill, regardless of their ability to pay. Our dedicated staff and volunteers are committed to providing excellent care to every patient and family that chooses Our Hospice.
